History: The Won Community Service Center (WCSC) is one of many charitable organizations affiliated with the Won Buddhist Temple of Philadelphia. The Temple has been involved in non-denominational and non-sectarian charitable projects since its founding in 1987. The Won Buddhist Temple set up a separate charitable organization, WCSC, in 1997. The mission of WCSC is to nurture and empower low-income families and under-represented minorities through three areas of service: education, counseling, and social work. The Won Kwang ESL Adult Program was established in 1995 and it is funded by the Adult Basic Education and Literacy Education Bureau of the Federal Government and local donations. The Children's ESL Program was started in 1999. These programs are funded by government grants, community donations and private sector organizations, such as the Philadelphia Foundation and other private foundations.
